Computer Security

Securing your PC is one of the most important steps in owning a computer. Having a secure computer can not only protect you from outside intruders but also keep your computer in top working performance. Whether you are just setting up your new PC or have a computer that you've been using for a while the number one thing you should always do first is run Window's Update. Running windows update installs vital security releases that your computer needs to keep out intruders. While updates are important it is also important to have a proper anti-virus program. There are several free anti-virus programs available for download. You should also ensure that your Window's Firewall is always on. Window's Firewall blocks access to unauthorized sites that could contain phishing sites or other malicious software. If you are having problems accessing certain sites or programs you can always add an exception to your firewall. Keep your computer's password secure by never writing it down or telling anyone. If someone needs access to your computer always type the password in for them. If you have multiple users you can set up file permissions and other access restrictions on important data. Your data such a personal information, phone numbers, and email is very important. When replacing a hard drive always be sure to dispose of the hard drive by either physically destroying it or by writing over the hard drive. Writing over the hard drive with all zeros requires a program that can be downloaded through most hard drive manufacturers. Lastly you should always backup your data in the case of complete hard drive failure. Securing your PC is for the most part cost effective and can cut back on costly computer repair.
