Internet Connection

Troubleshooting internet connection problems is one of the main difficulties PC users will encounter. Internet Connection Problems can range from a simple modem reset to an outage in your area. Everyone at some point has encountered a problem with their internet services. You may get a message displaying can't establish connection to server or cannot display webpage.

Example Loss of Internet Connection:

If your web browser is displaying this message there are a few things you should check first before calling your ISP. First open up your network connections and hit the diagnose and troubleshoot button. If this doesn't resolve your problems open up your network connections and view the Connection Status window. From there you need to look under the details button. Check to ensure your DCHP Enabled says Yes beside it and that your Default Gateway is pulling the proper IP Address. Back to the Network Connection Status hit the properties button and highlight IPv4 or if you are using the new IPv6 and hit properties. If you are on a dynamic IP address you should be obtaining your IP address and DNS servers automatically. Looking at the Network Connections window right-click on the network connection and ensure it is enabled. If you are using wireless make sure your wireless connection switch is turned on.

There are a couple of things your will need to check in your internet browser. Make sure your internet browser is not using the Work Offline mode as this will cause your Internet to cease working. View your internet options by going to the Connections tab under internet opetions and choose LAN settings. Make sure the automatically detect settings is checked and the Proxy server box is unchecked.

What is IPv6

IPv6 is the new version of protocol designed to solve the problems of IPv4. The main problem with IPv4 was the address space was exhausted due to a 12 digit structure it was capped off at around 4.3 billion (4,294,967,296) addresses. This produced a problem with more people using the internet these days and an increase in PDA's and other wireless devices. IPv6 is the solution to the ever expanding internet and the address exhaustion of IPv4. IPv6 has a much larger address space than IPv4 approximately 340 undecillion that consists of a 128 bit structure. Another big advantage is of IPv6 is it can support a much larger network and eliminate the need of NAT which causes several problems in itself.

An example of an IPv6 address: 6783:3hte:0000:3:cfr8:204:ff8c:9735
An example of an IPv4 address: 64.143.0.123

  • IPv6 is 8 octets in hexadecimal format separated by colons as opposed to IPv4's 32-bit decimal format
  • Any four digit group of zeros in an octet can be reduced to one zero or eliminated all-together. We will use our IP address above as an example.
6783:3hte:0000:3:cfr8:204:ff8c:9735 turns into
6783:3hte:0:3:cfr8:204:ff8c:9735 or
6783:3hte::3:cfr8:204:ff8c:9735

How To Get Better Performance out of Your PC

We've all been there before, a slow running PC can be quite the annoyance. That's why I'm going to give you a few tips on getting that PC back into shape. The first thing when optimizing your computer is to download all available system updates. It is important to have an anti-virus program on your computer. Anti-virus utilities help clean and guard your computer from malicious software that can collect confidential information, and cause privacy concerns. Spyware can cause your computer to run very slow due to the extra resources being used.

Quite often you might find your computer is starting to fill up with junk. You should perform a disk defrag at least once a month to boost your PC's performance. Running your systems disk defrag utility removes duplicate and unwanted files and will considerably help your systems speed by making it much easier to access files. A program I always recommend downloading is CCleaner, which cleans many unnecessary files such as internet history, temp internet files, cookies, and much more. It also comes with a registry cleaner and uninstall utility. Another way you could help capture more speed is by going through your programs list and uninstall unneeded and unused programs.

If you are experiencing slow startup times and your computer takes forever to load the operating system you should consider removing some of the startup items. Startup items are programs or processes that load on system startup. These programs or processes can decrease the performance of your computer and use up resources by continuing to run in the background. Consider downloading CCleaner or type msconfig in the command prompt and disable some of the unnecessary items.

Backing up data on your PC is very important. You may find that there comes a day when there is no other option but to perform a system recovery on your computer. Making either a recovery disk or setting a recovery partition on you computer can save you from buying a costly Operating System disk. A popular program for creating a recovery disk is Symantec Norton Ghost. Sometimes if your computer becomes slow and unresponsive this is your best option.

Computer Security

Securing your PC is one of the most important steps in owning a computer. Having a secure computer can not only protect you from outside intruders but also keep your computer in top working performance. Whether you are just setting up your new PC or have a computer that you've been using for a while the number one thing you should always do first is run Window's Update. Running windows update installs vital security releases that your computer needs to keep out intruders. While updates are important it is also important to have a proper anti-virus program. There are several free anti-virus programs available for download. You should also ensure that your Window's Firewall is always on. Window's Firewall blocks access to unauthorized sites that could contain phishing sites or other malicious software. If you are having problems accessing certain sites or programs you can always add an exception to your firewall. Keep your computer's password secure by never writing it down or telling anyone. If someone needs access to your computer always type the password in for them. If you have multiple users you can set up file permissions and other access restrictions on important data. Your data such a personal information, phone numbers, and email is very important. When replacing a hard drive always be sure to dispose of the hard drive by either physically destroying it or by writing over the hard drive. Writing over the hard drive with all zeros requires a program that can be downloaded through most hard drive manufacturers. Lastly you should always backup your data in the case of complete hard drive failure. Securing your PC is for the most part cost effective and can cut back on costly computer repair.
